Layered Thinking
Most decisions are made on the surface — at the layer of tactics, optics, or someone else's metric. Layered Thinking is a discipline for getting beneath them.
Pick any subject — a company, a decision, a project, a relationship. Then build the stack from the top down:
- Layer 8 — the most superficial, the most visible. What anyone glancing at the subject would see first.
- Layers 7 → 1 — descending toward depth. Each one beneath the last. Each one closer to what is really going on.
- Layer 0 — the foundation. The single human truth the entire structure is resting on. The most important layer of all. You write one sentence naming it, and one paragraph saying why.
Tesla is not a car company at the surface; it is an energy bet at a lower layer and a generational identity at a lower layer still. The car is Layer 8. Layer Zero is the human longing to be on the right side of history. The discipline of this exercise is descending honestly through your subject until you cannot dig any further.
